Turned from locally felled spalted sycamore from the Castlewellan area, this bowl shows the flowing dark lines and gentle colour shifts that make spalted sycamore so distinctive. Sycamore is normally a pale, fine‑grained hardwood with a calm, even appearance — but when spalting develops, the wood takes on a completely different character. The natural markings wander through the grain like ink on paper, giving each bowl its own unique pattern.
Sycamore has a long history in Ireland, often used for kitchenware, musical instruments, and fine turning thanks to its smooth texture and light tone. The spalted pieces feel a little wilder, shaped by time, weather, and the quiet life of the forest. Castlewellan’s woodlands, with their cool air and long‑established hardwood stands, often produce sycamore with especially expressive spalting.
Finished with a food‑safe natural oil, this bowl has a warm, tactile feel that highlights every detail of the grain. It works beautifully as a display piece, a centre feature, or simply as a unique touch of handcrafted Irish timber in the home.
