Turned from locally felled spalted beech from the Castlewellan area, this bowl shows the striking dark lines and gentle colour shifts that spalting brings out in the wood. Beech is normally a calm, even‑grained hardwood, but when spalting develops it takes on a far more expressive character. The patterns move through the grain in unpredictable ways, giving each bowl its own natural identity.
The timber comes from the mixed hardwood woodlands around Castlewellan, a region known for its long forest history and steady, slow‑grown trees. The cool, damp climate often encourages the subtle spalting that makes pieces like this so distinctive. It’s a bowl that carries both the story of the wood and the landscape it grew in.
Finished with a food‑safe natural oil, this piece has a warm, tactile feel that highlights the movement in the grain. It sits beautifully as a display bowl, a centre feature, or simply as a unique touch of handcrafted Irish timber in the home.
