Turned from locally felled horse chestnut from the Castlewellan area, this bowl has the soft tones and gentle grain that make horse chestnut such an interesting and often under‑appreciated hardwood. Unlike sweet chestnut, which is darker and naturally rich in tannins, horse chestnut is paler, lighter, and has a smooth, almost silky texture. It isn’t as hard as many native timbers, but it makes up for that with a clean, warm appearance that suits decorative pieces beautifully.
The wood for this bowl comes from the mixed hardwood stands around Castlewellan, an area known for its long woodland history and steady, slow‑grown timber. Horse chestnut from this region often shows subtle shifts in colour and occasional flashes of figure, giving each piece its own quiet character.
Finished with a food‑safe natural oil, this bowl works well as a display piece, a centre feature, or simply as a gentle touch of handcrafted Irish timber in the home.
