Beech
Beech has been a staple of Irish woodworking for generations. Known for its strength, smooth texture, and warm, pink‑tinged grain, it has long been used for furniture, kitchen tools, and everyday household items. In older Irish homes, beech was often the wood of choice for durable pieces that needed to withstand daily use — chopping boards, spoons, and sturdy work surfaces. Its reputation for reliability has never faded.
When turned on the lathe, beech reveals a fine, even grain that finishes beautifully. It’s a wood that feels naturally tactile, with a gentle warmth that suits both functional and decorative bowls. Some pieces develop subtle flecks or “ray patterns,” giving each bowl its own quiet character without overwhelming the simplicity of the form.
Much of the beech used in Ireland today comes from mature trees that have reached the end of their natural life or needed to be removed for safety. Turning this timber into bowls gives the wood a second life, transforming something once towering and familiar into a piece that can be used and appreciated every day.
Beech bowls are ideal for serving, gifting, or simply enjoying as a piece of honest Irish craft. They’re dependable, understated, and timeless, the kind of item that feels at home in any kitchen.
