Ash
Ash has long held a special place in Irish tradition. Known for its strength, flexibility, and beautiful pale grain, it has been used for centuries to make hurleys, tool handles, walking sticks, and everyday household items. In Irish folklore, ash was often seen as a protective wood, a symbol of resilience and good fortune. Many old stories describe ash branches being kept near the hearth or doorway to guard the home and bring balance to the family within.
Today, ash remains one of the most cherished native hardwoods in Ireland. Its light colour, subtle grain patterns, and ability to take a fine finish make it ideal for wooden bowls. When turned on the lathe, ash reveals flowing lines and gentle contrasts that feel both modern and deeply traditional.
Each ash bowl I create is shaped from locally sourced timber, chosen for its character and stability. No two pieces are ever the same, the grain tells its own story, shaped by the land and the seasons. Whether used for serving, display, or simply enjoyed as a piece of Irish craft, an ash bowl brings a touch of heritage into the home.
